Chris Evans-Thomas

Rooted deeply in Pembrokeshire soil, Chris Evans-Thomas has always called this beautiful corner of Wales home. Though she has travelled widely, her heart and heritage have remained firmly anchored here. Generations of her family have lived and worked in Pembrokeshire, contributing passionately to its community life - a devotion Chris continues with pride.

Life changed profoundly when her eldest son, Adam, was diagnosed with leukaemia at just 20 years old. Instead of watching both sons venture into the wider world, the family’s focus turned to hospital corridors and the long, relentless fight against cancer. Adam, determined and courageous, channelled his battle into hope for others, fundraising tirelessly for the Welsh Bone Marrow Tissue Donor Agency. Chris stood steadfastly beside him through every treatment, setback, and triumph during his ten-year journey.

Adam’s enduring legacy lives on through the creation of a Cancer Care Day Unit at Withybush Hospital and a Double ICU Room at Cardiff’s Heath Hospital. Inspired by his spirit, Chris went on to establish a Cancer Support Centre in Haverfordwest - a lifeline for those facing diagnosis and treatment. Her dedication to cancer patients across Pembrokeshire has been recognised with numerous awards, including the ultimate honour: an MBE from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Never one to rest on her laurels, Chris continues her mission. With the original centre now too small for the community’s growing needs, she is once again leading the charge to create a new home for the service. Since the pandemic, the centre has evolved to offer respite and “distraction therapy” not only for cancer patients but for those with other life-limiting conditions. The magic of the place, Chris says, lies in its people - the “Bucketeers” - who refuse to be defined by their illnesses. The sound of laughter often fills the space, a testament to their shared belief that life, no matter its challenges, is still meant to be lived with joy.
